April 30, 2024 - Comal ISD was well-represented this year in a variety of SkillsUSA state competitions resulting in a national qualifier; gold, silver and bronze medalists; an excellence award, several state superior awards and more.
In fact, 51 students in both middle and high school qualified for state SkillsUSA competitions. The big winners were from Smithson Valley High School’s SkillsUSA Healthcare chapter which brought home gold, silver and bronze medals as well as a national qualifier.
Eight healthcare students competed in four areas at the state competition including medical assisting where Hannah Sotelo earned the bronze; practical nursing in which Clarissa Wallace earned the gold and qualified for national competition; basic healthcare skills in which Ashlynn Flores earned the silver; and medical math.
Canyon High School students competed in several SkillsUSA categories including construction. In the carpentry division, Eric Ybarra earned a State Excellence award and nine students earned State Superior awards.
The Danville Middle School SkillsUSA competed with group projects with one placing first and receiving a blue ribbon and four placing second and receiving red ribbons.

SkillsUSA offers students in middle and high school opportunities to develop their personal and professional skills through hands-on learning. Students involved in SkillsUSA explore career pathways as they discover technical, skilled, service and health occupations.
Comal ISD continues to expand its Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and SkillsUSA is a great way for students to identify future careers.
