April 1, 2024 - Two Comal ISD students were selected among only 10 in the nation for the Student 2 Student (S2S) Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Mya Galvan from Pieper High School and Storm Pena from Davenport High School participated in the five-day intensive experience in February. The program aims to empower and develop students' leadership skills. They engaged in leadership activities and lessons alongside cadets and other S2S leaders.
Established by the Military Child Education Coalition, the program is designed to strengthen local campus S2S teams.
Student 2 Student is a student-led and faculty-advised program that welcomes new students to campuses. Comal ISD has several active S2S organizations.
Campus support from DHS for military-connected students is military liaison Rachel Kunkel and JROTC instructor Lt. Col. Patrick Almond. At PHS, support is provided by military liaison Misty Cantrell and JROTC instructor Maj. Dave Bower. Both DHS and PHS received the Purple Star Campus Designation for the 2023-2024 school year by Governor Greg Abbott in August 2023.
The Purple Star Campus Designation recognizes Texas district and charter schools that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.
Galvan and Storm were recognized by the Comal ISD Board of Trustees during its March 28 meeting.
